Markers
There are many different methods that can be used with Marker pens. Markers should be used quickly and ‘fluidly’ to gain more dynamic effects to sketched work.
The main methods we teach and use are:
Marker Wash (Flat) & Marker Wash (Flat & Detail)
Marker Wash (Depth)
Marker Rendering (using a light source)
For demonstrations on how to apply markers effectively look at the Sketching Course
Marker wash (Flat)
A marker wash is applied to a 2D sketch and is using a marker pen to quickly provide colour coverage to a sketch. This is then ‘overworked’ to give more detail.
Marker wash (depth)
A similar process to a basic marker wash but with additional marker layer work and the use of a black soft pencil to add shadows and a chinagraph pencil to add highlights.
Marker rendering
Adding a light source from either Top Left or Top Right and then using markers to leave light ‘patches’ or areas where the marker is not used. The more confident you become with marker pens the more you will use light.
