In order to design your resin poured tea light holder you should start by sketching out a series of rectangles for the Top view, with a centre line running horizontally across and vertically through the middle of the rectangle. The proportion of the rectangle should be approximately 1:6 i.e. 50mm height x 300mm wide. You should then sketch three circles (to represent the tea light candles. You can do two if you would prefer!) – you could potentially use a coin to draw around to get the circles; or a circle template or even a compass, although it is preferred if you try to sketch the circles freehand.

NB You should try not to use a ruler!

If you have access to an iPad and the Procreate App or any other tablet device then that could be used instead.

Directly underneath your Top view rectangle you should ‘drop‘ some feint (light) ‘leader lines’ and sketch another rectangle that is the same width as the initial one but that is not as high (perhaps 1:8 proportion) – see examples. This will be the Side view.

Again add centre lines both horizontally and vertically, as well as additional guidelines to aid the sketching i.e. leader lines from the outer edge of the circles.

Repeat this process five more times on a page so that you have six rectangles of 1:6 proportion each with a 1:8 proportion rectangle underneath.

Step 2

Now it is time to start sketching designs for the ‘river’ of resin. Think about the overall shape from the Top view including the resin. Once you have added a design for the Top view you can drop leader lines to the Side view to help line up the design work i.e. a cut into the side. Then, lightly in pencil, add a design for the Side view underneath, using the leader lines to help.

You should then add Thick and Thin lines to your design work to make it stand out on the page.
